Sunburn DIY Salve
A soothing DIY salve for sunburnt skin which is easily made by Tweens and Teens, but with adult supervision.
- Double Boiler, or make-shift double boiler
- Glass Jars or Salve Tins, sterilized
- 1 cup Calendula Oil
- Beeswax/wax (Choose on of the following options) (Option 1: 3 level tbsps. Beeswax Pastilles;
Option 2: Aprox. 1 oz. shaved, block,or another form of beeswax;
Option 3: For a VEGAN version, replace beeswax with equal amounts of either organic soy wax or candelila wax.)
- 2 tbsps Shea Butter
- 4-5 Drops of your favorite essential oils (Optional)

Sterilize and set aside your chosen salve tins or small glass storage jars.

Prepare double-boiler with water and place on medium/low heat.

In the top pan, add the Calendula oil, beeswax (or vegan wax), shea butter, and essential oil(s).

Heat the mixture until the beeswax melts, stirring frequently.

Once everything has melted and is thoroughly combined, remove from heat.

While still hot, carefully pour the liquid into your chosen containers. (If the mixture begins to solidify while you’re filling your containers, simply place it back on medium-low heat until it liquifies again).

Set the filled Calendula Salve containers aside and allow them to completely cool before placing and tightening lids (let them cool naturally allowing infusion during the cooling process).
The Calendula Salve will harden as it cools.
Once fully cooled, it is ready to use.
When ready to apply to sunburn, use a salve spoon, popsickle stick, or very clean fingers to collect a small amount of salve and apply to your skin as needed.
A little goes a long way!
Store your salve containers in a cool, dark location.
Homemade Calendula Salve can “stay good” for several years, however its medicinal potency will decrease with time and age.
* You can set up a make-shift double-boiler by placing a glass Pyrex bowl or stainless steel bowl on top of a saucepan with water. Pyrex is a brand of heat-resistant glassware.
