We Offer Local and Imported Cheese

We are an essential link in the chain that supports sustainable agricultural efforts in our area. The sale of local cheeses accounts for over 60% of the department’s total sales.

We offer as much variety as possible, including:

  • Various milk sources (cow, sheep, goat, and mixed).
  • Soft & rich double and triple creams and fresh, aged, and extra-aged Tommes
  • Undoubtedly the best variety of Vermont cheeses in the region.
  • A wide variety of brie, Chevres, gouda, washed rinds, and blues, some imported from all over the world.
  • Many of our cheeses are locally made — many are made from grass-fed or pastured animals.
  • Cheeses from raw milk.
  • Fresh Mozzarella in self-serve bulk bins

Imports include staples such as Manchego, Bucheron, and Taleggio.

Fresh To Bite

Large and eclectic describes the dizzying array of local and international cheeses offered. They include cow, sheep, and goat milk cheeses.

Everyday cheeses include fresh Mozzarella, Aged Parmesan, Aged Romano, Aged Asiago, and Fresh Feta. Shredded versions (aside from the Feta) are also available, prepackaged.

Pairing cheese with ideal accompaniments such as fruit pastes, honey, conserves, mustards, crackers (many locally made), beer, and wine is essential. Ask us for suggestions!

Spotlight On Cheese

We inhabit Cheese Island, a truly unique cheese department, a hybridizing of specialty local, artisanal cheese offerings, with uncommon and hard-to-find imported cheeses and pre-packaged convenience cheeses for the everyday cheese drawer.

Nettie, Carol, and Janet have been the friendly faces on Sunday evenings for about a year now. But in fact, they have all worked in the Cheese department for more than ten years. They all have very interesting jobs outside of the Co-op, do their side hustle here, and provide a deep continuity of cheese knowledge and customer service that we find invaluable.

Scott and Cal are our anchor mongers, answering your cheese questions, helping you find that special cheese for your weekend cheese and charcuterie board, or helping you to identify that cheese you had at a friend’s house. You know—the one you can’t remember the name of, but you know it came from the Co-op, and it might have been cow’s milk, but you aren’t sure…it might have been hard, or maybe it was soft? But it was delicious! We love that game. Scott and Cal are both cheese lovers; they actually know about the products, and if they don’t know, they would love to learn.
