Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, marks the historic moment in 1865 when Union troops arrived in
Galveston, Texas to announce the freedom of enslaved individuals, more than two years after President Abraham
Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth represents the triumph of liberty for African Americans. On that day, Union General Gordon Granger delivered the long-overdue declaration that all enslaved people in Texas were free, bringing an official end to slavery in the state.
Beyond its historical significance, Juneteenth is a time for reflection, celebration, and advocacy. It honors African American heritage, achievements, and contributions while reinforcing the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice in society.
Over the years, it has gained widespread recognition as a pivotal moment in American history and culture. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, following decades of advocacy and growing recognition of its historical significance.
Happy Juneteenth! May this day be filled with reflection, celebration, and unity as we honor freedom and progress.
