Bulk Reset: Bring Your Containers!

| Bulk, Sustainability

Plastic. It really stinks. No seriously, since the pandemic started it has been growing in use and it is not a feasible long-term option for our Earth, oceans, people and animals to survive in a healthy manner. We at the Brattleboro Food Co-op want to do everything that is possible to decrease plastic use. Recently we revamped our Bulk department in an effort to offer more serve-yourself options for bulk food. The main goal was to reduce plastic consumption by allowing you to bring your own clean containers into the Co-op and fill them. Yes, we did the research and it appears that COVID-19 does not exist on surface areas for long periods of time and thus transmission is low if anyone is sharing a surface. We will continue to sanitize and keep the bins clean. However, we ask that you please sanitize your hands or wear gloves before you touch pens, bins and containers. Don’t forget that if you forgot your own containers please use paper bags to purchase bulk food.

The Star Wars of the Grocery World

This past Wednesday, April 24th, we had a spectacular sale: everything in the entire Bulk department was discounted by 25%.  One of our morning cashiers told Emily it was like the opening day of Star Wars; Sue compared to Black Friday.  People were practically camped out overnight, waiting for our doors to crack open at 7am.

Tierra Farm: crushing the competition one cashew at a time.

| Bulk

Tierra Farm supplies lots and lots of nuts, seeds, dried fruits, granola, coffees and chocolate covered delights in all sorts of flavors and varieties to our Bulk department.  They’re easy to miss, since they generally use zero-to-minimal packaging, and the packaged goods we do carry from them are branded with our own Brattleboro Food Co-op logo.  But once you notice them, you’ll see them everywhere: in the Bulk bins, on the Bulk shelves, next to the registers, in the baby section.  And you might also notice that all their product is organic, peanut free, kosher, and non-GMO, and if you taste their products you’ll notice they’re all REALLY GOOD.  I fell for the Austrian pumpkin seeds when they were on sale a couple months ago…yeesh.
